Our story

How AMGB started

Chris started buying gold and silver at garage sales as a hobby, around a decade ago. Customers kept asking for a business card and the hobby grew into a business naturally. The first business name reference was "SA Gold Diggers", borrowed from a friend's idea around the phrase "have a dig", because customers were going inside their home to dig through drawers for unworn or broken jewellery.

The choice to stay mobile was deliberate. Chris considered opening a shopfront interstate and looked at the market closely. There are lots of shops, but not many mobile gold buyers. The mobile model fits the work better, and it fits the customers better, particularly the inherited-jewellery and estate-clearing families who do not want to walk into a shop with all of it.

Chris is joined on most visits by Sharon or their son Dylan, for a second pair of eyes and a calmer doorstep conversation. Sharon handles the client side of the conversation, talking through the process, explaining what each piece is and why, and giving customers a calm presence at the table. Dylan steps in when Sharon is not available on the day, and at times comes along regardless, particularly on the longer drives. Chris handles all the testing, weighing and calculation. The second person on every visit is there for the people side and for safety.

Chris walks you through what each hallmark means and why your piece is worth what it is worth, so you leave with a clear picture of what you sold.

Positioning

Why we are not a pawn shop

Pawn shops want your gold cheap and they want you to be in a hurry. We want a fair price for a piece you are ready to let go of, and the time to walk away if it is not right.

Shopfronts and pawn brokers

  • You carry the gold to them
  • Counter, queue, no privacy
  • Pressure to decide while you are there
  • Rotating staff, no relationship

Adelaide Mobile Gold Buyers

  • We come to your kitchen table
  • Private, calm, named people
  • Walk away if the offer does not suit
  • You meet Chris and Sharon, every time

A small, honest family business

We are not a chain, not a franchise, and not a shopfront. We do not hold industry certificates or memberships. We are Chris and Sharon, a husband-and-wife team who have been buying gold and silver in South Australia for around a decade.

What that means in practice. Every visit is run by the people who own the business. Every offer comes from the same person. Every receipt has the same name on it. If anything goes wrong, or you have a question after the visit, you are calling the same number you called to book.

The trust comes from the work, not from a wall of badges. That is the whole point.

Aged care, estates, community

Soft proof of values. We do not chest-beat about this work, but it is most of what we do.

Aged-care visits

Chris and Sharon visit aged-care facilities and retirement villages by arrangement with the activities coordinator. Residents are valued privately. The pace is unhurried, two hours rather than one.

Deceased estates

We work with executors, solicitors, and families through the whole estate sorting process. No pressure on timing, estates take months. The first visit is usually an unhurried walk-through of the jewellery box.

Community groups

Church groups, women's groups, RSL clubs, all welcome. Chris arrives with coffee and the valuation gear, sets up in the meeting room, and works through everyone one at a time.

Hallmark education at the visit

Chris walks you through what each hallmark means and why your piece is worth what it is worth. 9 ct versus 18 ct versus sterling versus plated, explained at the table, not just calculated behind the loupe.

Family member or translator welcome

If you would feel more comfortable with a family member, friend, or a family member translating, please bring them. We work with long-time Adelaide residents and families across SA whose first language is not English, and we welcome it.

Free in-home valuation

The in-home valuation costs nothing under any circumstance. No call-out fee, no inspection fee, no booking fee. You decide on the day whether the offer suits, and you can walk away if it does not.

A small family note

A third pair of hands when needed

Chris and Sharon's son Dylan started training in the business in 2025, transitioning from a painting apprenticeship. Dylan attends visits alongside Sharon for engagement and safety, fills in when Sharon is not available, and at times rides along with Chris on the longer drives. He does not do testing or pricing, that stays with Chris. Long-term he may take over. For now he is learning the trade the same way Chris did, one visit at a time.
